Celebrate Fa11 with China Care!

On Saturday, October 15, Northwester China Care kicked off the new school year with a joint mentorship and playgroup event to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

This holiday has deep cultural connections to Chinese agriculture. Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month of a lunar year so that there is always a beautiful full moon in the sky. The timing of celebration coincides with the end of the harvest season, so the holiday became associated with successful harvests. It serves to remind all of us to cherish those around us and value hard work.

We celebrated this holiday with our mentees and new member of China Care in Parkes Hall. The kids enjoyed coloring activities and the stories about the origins about mooncakes and zongzi.

Coloring fun with our attendees!

We also made gorgeous paper lanterns together. All of the kids enjoyed the craft and were proud of their own lanterns.

Can we make this lantern?

Isn't my lantern pretty?

Another highlight of the event was a musical performance by the Northwestern student A Cappella group, Treblemakers.

A delight for our ears! Treblemakers' amazing A Cappella peformance.

Thank you to all of our volunteers and attendees! We hope you had fun!

If you didn’t make it, don’t worry! There will be more events coming up soon!

Children’s Day!

Children’s Day is a major holiday that is celebrated in China on June 1st every year. On this day, parents often take children out to amusement parks and give them presents. In these activities, parent-child relationships are deepened.

On Saturday, May 14th, 2011, China Care hosted a playgroup and mentorship event celebrating this wonderful holiday with our members!

To start it off, the kids got to color and play around with play-dough to get their creativity flowing!

Etiquette Banquet

Do you know how to properly hold chopsticks? Do you know how to properly greet your elders at formal Chinese dinners?

Let us show you!

Today, April 30, mentorship held the first “etiquette banquet”! While enjoying grapes, juice, wafers and sandwiches, the kids learned ways of a traditional Chinese banquet!

First, we introduced ourselves to our students! But why stand in a line you ask? Well, in Chinese formal events, one must greet the oldest first. So here we are!

Hello! My name is...

Ni Hao!

Next up, the kids mastered chopsticks! We then had a grape passing contest!

Chopsticks? Piece of Cake!

Errr...Maybe this is harder than I thought

Show me the way, Master!

Fun facts to know:

1. During Chinese dinners, if the room becomes quiet, the host will try to create a livelier and louder atmosphere

2. Never accept the last piece of a dish unless it is offered to you

3. Don’t point at something with your pointer finger or chopsticks; instead gesture with an open hand

4. Don’t bang your chopsticks, because it will make you look like a beggar!

After all of that chopsticks, the kids made Mother’s day presents! However, these presents are sure to impress because they were filled with Chinese good luck symbols!

Lesson for You!

Hope everyone enjoyed the first ever etiquette banquet!!

Join us for our next event so you can have this much fun!

Love,

China Care!

Easter Play Group Event!

Celebrate Easter with China Care!

On Saturday April 16, China Care’s play group got to celebrate Easter with our adorable attendees! The kids could decorate their own eggs with Lorraine, fold egg baskets with Karen and make bunny ear headbands with Josh.

Make Bunny Ears with us!

Do you have what it takes to create a masterpiece?

Well show you how to paint an egg right!

These boys and girls will never cease to amaze us with their creativity! Their eggs colorful and they all looked beautiful.

The prettiest eggs weve ever seen!

Everyone at the event also got to taste Corey’s scrumptious fried rice and tea eggs.

Coreys Tea Eggs! Dont they look yummy?

The kids clearly loved the rice and eggs because they kept asking for second helpings! After eating, the kids got to enjoy an exciting Easter egg hunt and the story of the Paper Dragon.

We thank everyone who attended this event and hoped that you had fun! As always, thank you for our volunteers! You guys are the best!

Happy Easter everyone!

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE! <3 ChinaCare

Our First Annual Benefit Dinner!

On April 2nd, 2011, our club hosted our first ever benefit dinner at Parkes Hall. Over thirty China Care parents came together and enjoyed a fun afternoon with NU’s China Care members! The performance of Chinese dance troupe Typhoon was loved by the kids and parents for their beauty. A cappella group Treblemakers amazed everyone at the event with their harmony and musical talent.

Various forums on topics, such as “How to ethically raise an Asian Child in America”, were very informative and interactive, as parents not only got to chat with many other parents facing the same dilemmas but also communicate with them on how to best resolve these challenging issues. Many parent attendees also participated in the silent auction where various gift certificates, art work and crafts were presented.

Upstairs, the kids had a blast drawing, watching Kung-Fu Panda and learning Karate together.

Throughout the event, everyone got to enjoy delicious pot-stickers, fried rice, noodles, ice cream and cupcakes!

Overall, this event was definitely successful. Everyone had a great time while fundraising for our orphan of the quarter! We hope to host other events like this in the future.  We also sincerely thank all attendees and volunteers for your contributions!

Corey, a China Care JE, greeting one of our youngest attendees at the entrance!

The amazing performance of student a cappella group Treblemakers mesmerized all of the attendees!

There were over 90 attendees in total! We sincerely hope that you all enjoyed the afternoon we planned for you and thank you for your continued support of Northwestern's China Care!Check out this hot new trio! With Corey on the flute, Brian on the guitar and Rohan rocking the dance floor, nothing is stopping these China Care boys from putting on a great show!
